Site Reliability Engineer - PCT TechOps (14311)

Description

Technology Operations is an SRE and DevOps enablement team within Private Client Digital and Technology, supporting Private Client Technology UK. The team operates across the Creation and Continuity streams, partnering with delivery teams across Core Banking, Rewards, Onboarding, Data, Operations, Wealth and Investment, and Client Servicing.

Improve the reliability, resilience and operability of services across PCT through software engineering, DevOps and SRE practices. The role operates horizontally across PCT, partnering with delivery teams to identify bottlenecks, address technical debt and reduce operational friction through automation, self-service capabilities and reusable engineering patterns. The role helps teams deliver at pace while maintaining secure, reliable services. It makes safe engineering easier through reusable guardrails, templates, automation and self-service capabilities that reduce toil, address technical debt and improve security posture. The successful candidate will combine a strong software engineering background with practical experience in Azure, containerised applications, delivery automation and observability.

Key Responsibilities

Software engineering and reliability

  • Diagnose production issues across application code, infrastructure, configuration and delivery pipelines.
  • Develop and maintain automation, utilities and reusable components that improve service reliability and reduce manual work.
  • Apply sound software engineering practices, including testing, peer review, secure coding and maintainable design.
  • Translate incident learning and recurring failures into sustainable engineering improvements.

DevOps, cloud and infrastructure automation

  • Engineer and support services hosted in Microsoft Azure.
  • Work with containerised applications hosted in Azure Container Apps (ACA) and/or Kubernetes, including Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
  • Improve Azure DevOps pipelines to make deployments repeatable, observable and recoverable.
  • Manage infrastructure and configuration through version control, infrastructure as code and automated deployment.
  • Identify and improve bottlenecks affecting delivery, operations and recovery.

Observability standards and templates

  • Help define and implement observability standards across PCT.
  • Build reusable templates and patterns for application instrumentation, logs, metrics, traces, dashboards and alerting.
  • Use Dynatrace, Splunk and Azure Monitor to investigate service health, performance and reliability risks.
  • Help teams instrument C#/.NET services with Application Insights to understand requests, dependencies, exceptions and distributed traces.
  • Use Log Analytics and Kusto Query Language (KQL) to query and correlate application and platform telemetry, investigate incidents and identify recurring issues.
  • Create reusable Azure Monitor alert rules, workbooks, dashboards and diagnostic settings through infrastructure as code.
  • Help teams adopt actionable alerts and appropriate service-level indicators and objectives.

Engineering enablement and technical debt

  • Partner with PCT teams to identify technical debt, repetitive work and operational friction.
  • Build automation and self-service capabilities that reduce dependency on manual intervention.
  • Develop and promote golden paths, reusable runbooks and engineering patterns.
  • Develop reusable guardrails and templates that embed agreed security, reliability and operational standards into delivery workflows.
  • Partner with delivery teams to adopt these capabilities and use feedback to improve their usability and effectiveness.
  • Help teams adopt these capabilities and demonstrate their effect on reliability and delivery.

Production support and stakeholder engagement

•    Participate in on-call duties, incident response and planned out-of-hours work.
•    Maintain effective working relationships with delivery teams and stakeholders across PCT.
•    Communicate production risks, dependencies and improvement priorities clearly.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

•    A relevant qualification in computer science, software engineering, information technology or a related discipline is desirable. Equivalent practical experience is acceptable.
•    Substantial professional software engineering experience across software development and production systems.
•    Practical experience applying DevOps or SRE practices.
•    Demonstrated experience developing and troubleshooting C#/.NET Framework and Core applications in production.
•    Practical experience operating and improving services in Microsoft Azure.
•    Experience supporting containerised applications in ACA and/or Kubernetes.
•    Evidence of delivering automation or self-service capabilities that reduce operational toil.
•    Experience working across multiple engineering teams and managing stakeholder relationships.

Equivalent depth of experience and demonstrated capability may satisfy the indicative experience requirements.

Technical Capability
•    Strong C#/.NET development and debugging skills.
•    Strong understanding of Azure DevOps, including source control, pull requests, CI/CD pipelines and deployment practices.
•    Practical infrastructure-as-code experience using Bicep and/or Terraform, with the ability to understand and work across both.
•    Proficiency in YAML-based pipeline and configuration definitions.
•    Practical scripting capability in Bash and/or PowerShell, with the ability to work across both.
•    Strong understanding of Dynatrace and Splunk, supported by practical observability and production diagnostic experience.
•    Practical experience with Azure Monitor, Application Insights and Log Analytics, including application instrumentation, telemetry correlation, dashboards and actionable alerts.
•    Ability to write KQL queries to investigate failures, analyse service behaviour and support operational reporting.
•    Ability to embed secure engineering practices into application code, delivery pipelines, infrastructure as code and reusable deployment patterns.
•    Understanding of container deployment, configuration, health checks, scaling and troubleshooting.
•    Working knowledge of SRE practices, including service-level objectives, incident learning, toil reduction and recovery engineering.
•    Experience in financial services or another environment with demanding reliability requirements.
•    Experience with distributed systems, messaging and event-driven architectures.
•    Experience developing observability standards or shared engineering templates across multiple teams.
•    Experience building golden paths or internal self-service capabilities.
•    Experience with performance engineering, capacity planning and resilience testing.
•    Relevant Azure, Kubernetes or Terraform certifications.
•    Proficiency in using AI-enabled productivity tools, such as Copilot, to improve efficiency, generate insight and support decision-making. Applies critical thinking and sound judgement when interpreting outputs, remains accountable for the quality and accuracy of their work

Behaviours and Ways of Working
•    Uses evidence to investigate problems and establish contributing causes.
•    Takes ownership of improvements through implementation and adoption.
•    Builds collaborative relationships across engineering teams and business stakeholders.
•    Explains technical risks and tradeoffs clearly.
•    Balances immediate operational needs with sustainable engineering improvements.
•    Creates practical standards and reusable capabilities that teams can adopt.
